Now, let’s see the functions of each part of the Bra/Brassiere one by one in details.
1. Front Strap & Back Strap:
The straps just connect the front of the bra to the back. The main purpose of the straps is to hold the bra in the correct position. And they also offer a little help in supporting your bust. Make sure you keep the straps at a comfortable length so that they don’t dig into your shoulders. Else, it will hurt your shoulder.
2. Slider:
The strap length can be easily adjusted with the help of the slider rings. Adjust the slider in such a way to make the straps are neither too tight nor too loose.
3. Cups:
We discussed a lot in selecting the correct cup size in How to Measure Bra Size article. So, if you suspect you are wearing a wrong bra size then I would suggest you to read the above mentioned article.
You might have known A,B,C,D cup sizes. Basically the cups are made of 2 or 3 parts. Make sure that the cups give you full coverage and breast tissue is not spilling out in the front or at the sides.
4. Center Gore:
Many people have asked me What is a Gore on a bra? And what is so important about it?
As the name suggests, it sits at the centre of the bra and forms a bridge between the cups. And an important part of a bra. Sometimes, it’s also called the gore.
This should always sit flat on your body. If it doesn’t, that means you need smaller band size or larger cup size. Consider it a pro-tip!
5. Neck Line
The neck line gives full coverage for the breast. Avoid wearing deep neck bra if you want to avoid cleavage exposure.
6. Underwire:
Underwires are generally made with a firm material, it is encased in a fabric that surrounds the cup. Besides providing support, it also gives your bust a subtle lift. So, if you are looking for a well-defined breast shape, then an underwired bra is your best friend.
7. Underband:
The primary support provided comes from the under band and not just the straps. This part of bar may be wired or non-wired. Wired bras give great support and are generally recommended for all cup sizes above C.
The Weight Lifter: When you wear a bra this under band actually carry the weight of the breast.
8. Side cup lining
The side cup lining of bra helps to provide the shape as well as supports the breast. This slide cup lining is visible over your dress top if the dress is tight.
9. Sideband
The Sideband also assist in breast support. This part of the bar is also called as side wings.
10. Back Band
The Back band comes at back side of the bra. It plays vital role in breast support. The bra back strap gets connected with Back Band. It should sit flat on your back, without digging in (too tight) or wrinkling (too loose).
11. Elastic Band
Well, the main purpose of elastic band id support and comfort. If the elastic band is too tight or the material is hard then it will hurt your back.
12. Hook & Eye:
When buying a bra, hook your bra in the last hook and check that there is space to fit two fingers underneath the bra band comfortably. This is because the fabric will slowly start to stretch out making the band a bit loose.
The hook & eye closure is used to fasten the bra around your body. So, when you buy a bra, the right way to go about using it is to hook it in the last column and then move on to the ones on the inside, ‘cos the fabric will slowly start to stretch out making the band a bit loose.
13. Apex:
Apex is the point of bra which is connects bra’s cup and straps to support the bra. New women who is using bra newly she could fell a little gap here.
